Making Our New House Feel Like Home (One Wall at a Time)

New House Feel Like Home – Moving house is always a big job, but doing it with little ones in tow? That’s a whole new level of chaos. Between trying to unpack boxes, keeping everyone fed, and working out where the teaspoons have gone, it’s easy for decorating to fall to the bottom of the list.

But once the dust settled (literally), I started to notice how bare everything looked. Blank walls everywhere. It didn’t feel like us yet. That’s when I decided to tackle one of my favourite parts of nesting – putting together some wall art and making our new house feel more like a home.

Making Our New House Feel Like Home

Step One: Find Your Style (and Stick With It… Mostly)

I started by deciding on the kind of vibe I wanted in each room. The bedroom needed to feel calm and cosy, the hallway something welcoming, and the playroom – well, that’s where I could have a bit of fun with colour.

I’m definitely drawn to Scandinavian-style décor – think soft neutrals, natural wood, and a few pops of colour. But I didn’t want it to feel too “put together”. Homes with kids need to feel lived-in, right? A few fingerprints on the frames just add to the charm (or that’s what I’m telling myself).

Step Two: Mix and Match

When it came to choosing pieces, I went for a combination of calming landscapes, simple line drawings, and a couple of playful prints for the little ones’ space. I found so many lovely options online – Desenio had a great range of affordable prints and frames that worked really well together without needing a designer’s eye.

Their gallery wall tool was surprisingly helpful for planning layouts before I ordered anything – and saved me from the “does this actually go?” panic later. It also meant I could get the proportions right without standing in the living room holding things up at random angles!

Step Three: Make It Feel Personal

The trick, I think, is choosing art that means something to you. Maybe it’s a quote that makes you smile, a photo-style print of somewhere you love, or colours that tie in with your favourite cosy blanket.

I also added a few family photos and some of the kids’ artwork in small frames – it makes the gallery wall feel unique and not too “off the shelf”. A bit of personality goes a long way when you’re trying to make a new place feel settled.

Step Four: Don’t Wait for Perfection

One thing I’ve learned (after overthinking more than a few rooms) is that your home will never feel “finished”. And that’s okay. Our tastes change, the kids’ toys multiply, and life happens.

So don’t be afraid to start small – a few framed prints can completely transform a space. Sometimes, a little wall art is all it takes to turn a house from “new and echoey” to “cosy and ours”.

A Little Treat

If you’re tempted to refresh your walls too, there’s a brilliant offer on at the moment. You can use the code UNDER5S at Desenio for 45% off prints (personalised prints excluded) and 10% off frames until 23:59 on the 23rd of October.

It’s a lovely excuse to finally do something with that blank space above the sofa – and it feels even better when you know you’ve grabbed a bargain.

The Final Touches

Now that everything’s up, I can honestly say the house feels so much more like home. The prints have added warmth and character, and I love how the mix of colours and textures changes the mood in each room.

It’s amazing what a few pictures can do – and even more amazing how much calmer the space feels now. There’s still a long list of things to do (and probably always will be), but it finally feels like our place.
